The human brain is a mosaic structure with a great deal of genetic diversity that arises from post-zygotic (i.e., somatic) genetic variation. The Khoshkhoo lab is interested in studying somatic variation as it pertains to typical brain development as well as in neurological diseases. While the overall mission of the lab is to contribute to the development of novel treatments for neuropsychiatric diseases, we hope to achieve that through rigorous science based on cutting edge genetics and genomics techniques and systems neurobiological approaches. Our work spans the direct investigation of the human brain tissue to using cells lines and model systems. Our aim is to identify novel somatic variants in the brain, to examine their functional impact at the level of individual cells and neural circuits, and to find new drugs and targets that could be leveraged for the development of targeted and disease-modifying therapies.
